Local Athlete to Compete in IRONMAN World Championships for Cancer Cures
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (San Diego) Chapter is Turning Training into Treatment for Billion Dollar Campaign
(CITY, DATE) – As the world’s largest nonprofit fighting blood cancer, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) relies on its incredible fundraising campaigns to help support lifesaving research, patient support and education, and advocacy efforts that benefit blood cancer patients. (Dr. Wayne Warrington) of (Haleiwa, HI.) has announced that he’ll be raising funds for LLS’s iconic sports training program, Team In Training and competing in the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, HI, on (October 13, 2018). Warrington will be one of 6 Team In Training teammates competing in the spectacular Aloha State.
LLS’s Team In Training campaign continues to be the leading endurance and training program that raises funds through the delivery of a transformative experience that inspires and supports “teammates” through camaraderie, coaching, fundraising support and personal discovery. 2018 marks the 30th year of Team In Training, and LLS continue to innovate a platform for fundraisers to change lives, both theirs and those impacted by blood cancers.
The IRONMAN World Championships is one of the world’s most demanding athletic events – featuring a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. Warrington will join more than 2,000 athletes from around the world. In exchange for raising funds, Warrington will receive (X) months of training by Team In Training’s coaches who establish customized training regimens, provide advice on nutrition, hydration, injury prevention and more. Each teammate is assigned a Team In Training Staff person and Coach and is provided the resources to support fundraising and complete the event.
Dr. Warrington got involved with LLS after is mother was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1998. He was a medical student at the time when he heard about the fundraising program by encountered his chief resident on rounds in the ER hooked up to an IV pole. Evidently she had overdone it with her training for another fundraising race and became dehydrated. Warrington said he went home that night and immediately signed up to race the 2001 Los Angeles triathlon. His fundraising goal at that time…..$3600. His mom thought he was crazy. Not because he was signing up to do his first triathlon, but because she didn’t believe he could raise that kind of money. In the end he raised close to $25,000 that year and has continued to fundraise ever since, completing 8 IronMan distance triathlons, but never The World Championships in Kona.
“I’m looking forward to the IRONMAN World Championships and the training journey to get there with Team In Training. What’s most exciting is not only do I get to be on the same course with the world’s top athletes, but more importantly, I’m helping save lives by raising a substantial amount of funds to drive forward the LLS mission to end blood cancers,” said Warrington.
Warrington will continue to train over the next (X) weeks – all in the hopes of reaching his fundraising goal of $100,000. To donate to the cause visit his fundraising page:
