Event Description:
Why: The SMA was born on Tavarua, having held our first organizational meeting there in the mid-80’s, the first years that Tavi was open. Every year since, we’ve met there for our annual gathering.
The SMA trip is a great mix of outstanding surf, world class lodging and food, superb family environs with activities for all (swimming pool and gorgeous natural hot tub, SUPs, diving, unbelievable fishing, village trips), medical and social interest talks in the evenings, and medical clinics in the villages. With over 30 years of experience, this trip allows us to find the absolute best of Fiji, including sharing in the lives of Fijians we’ve watched grow up. The village trips will deeply impress you with what wonderful caring people the Fijians are. Then there are those barrels at Cloudbreak….
Who goes on the trip? A wonderful mix of individuals, couples, and families all sharing an interest in the waves, culture, and medical well-being of Fiji. Most, but not all, of those who come have medical training and practice.
What does it cost? The SMA charges a conference fee of $500 (plus paypal fee). We use the fees to not only support SMA activities, but also for scholarships for Fijian villagers, projects in the villages, medical supplies, medications and to support the Christmas fund for Tavarua employees. Note that the conference fee is payable by all adults, medical and non-medical, surfer and non-surfer alike.
